Originally titled 'A Story About Smoking at the Back of the Supermarket,' it drew upon the author's personal background in customer service sales to craft a grounded narrative distinct from his previous supernatural work. This massive organic response prompted Square Enix to serialize the story in Monthly Big Gangan starting in August 2022. During this transition, the title was officially changed to 'Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You,' and early web chapters were replaced with newly written content for print.
